FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION IN KENYA

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a practice by some communities e.g. the Maasai, kisii, just to mention. This practice is done to girls as a rite of passage meaning that after the initiation right one is declared a woman who is ready for marriage and engage in any other sexual related activities. When a girl is circumcised they cease to go to school and get married off by their parents at whatever age to old age.

This practice really interferes with the girls education life since some are forced to get married at a very early age of even 14years and stop going to school thus shattered dream of prosperity. To majority of these communities such girls are for bearing children and taking care of their husband and homestead. This practice is a turn off to other men since they see it lowering the female dignity and it’s also a bad omen.

This also affects the girl’s health and at times brings complications during childbirth, it can also lead to HIV infection because one knife is used to all the girls undergoing the rite. This practice has really wasted many girls future in Kenya. Without education you have no voice of your own. Your husband and educated people are your voice thus you do everything under their instructions.

We hope that one day this practice will die in Kenya so that young girls can leave a brighter future than what they have now in the various communities.

Bye, Evelyn
