Kenyans
have adapted to another genre of loving English football and forgetting about
their basics needs. Football to some Kenyans means so much than you can think
of. The English lovers mostly are low income earners and who will let their
families be home because of school fees, lack of food and proper shelter but
invest all the little income they have in clubs and pubs watching football.
These
English football lovers are referred to as fanatics because they think of you
wonna think about they will go any extremes to watch an English football match.
The widely supported teams in Kenya are arsenal and Manchester united. We got a few Chelsea fanatics but they
too still go to the extreme. So what kind of sacrifices am I talking about?
The fans
spend more time in the pubs and clubs sipping alcohol, which according to them
it’s a priority as they watch their favorite teams playing. Therefore the
entire burden tending children is left on the wives who have to cope with
situation and does it single handedly. Women don’t complain about the habits f
their men because at these points a man can easily leave you altogether. I
remember a friend of mine who told the boyfriend to choose between football and
that was the end of their relationship. This is because these men spend more
time in the pub drinking and watching football more than with their fiancés and
girlfriends and make matters worse their children and wives.
There are
usually struggling to live but spending little money they make on alcohol as
they watch the games is not a big deal to them . bear in mind that when they
are watching these matches they actually go extra mile of buying all the
t-shirts for the particular team they support for example a Manchester united
fan like me will buy the t-shirt so that when am going to watch the game am on
it. Remember this t-shirts are very expensive yet they don’t mind. They would
rather buy them than spend the money on other important things: necessities.
Mind you
there is an option of watching this football match at home by subscribing to
DSTV or GTV which has become more affordable compared to the idea of spending
so much money in the clubs and pubs. Some of the fanatics not even own a TV
set, they may be living in slums or shanty somewhere.
